About Us
Lorebase began in 2024 and remains the full-time dedication of just two people in Iowa, both with backgrounds in arts and engineering. We demanded a space for digital sovereignty that didn't sacrifice collaboration. Our promise is simple: whether you are building alone or together, your knowledge and your worlds belong to you.
Standalone Sovereignty
Lorebase is a complete, standalone desktop application - not a fragile plugin ecosystem. Your world runs on a lightning-fast local engine, while every change is simultaneously mirrored to open formats (Markdown and YAML) on your drive. You get the performance of a native app with the peace of mind of plain text.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it really free?
Yes. Lorebase is free for personal use. We offer optional commercial licenses and services for professional teams and power users who need them.
Where is my data stored?
Your active environment runs on a high-performance local SQLite database, allowing for instant searches and real-time multiplayer. Simultaneously, Lorebase outputs mirrored files of your world into standard Markdown and YAML files in your vault. You have total digital sovereignty and a universally readable copy of your work at all times.
Does it work offline?
Completely. Lorebase is a standalone desktop application. You can work entirely offline, and optionally collaborate over the LAN, only connecting to the internet if you choose to use remote collaboration features.
How does collaboration work?
Lorebase supports real-time LAN multiplayer using Yjs over WebSockets. Friends can join using a web browser for ease of access. For collaboration across different networks, we offer optional services.
Roadmap
Direct to Engine
We are actively building a native Unreal Engine plugin. Similar to articy:draft, Lorebase won't just be an external document - it will directly generate strongly-typed gameplay properties, dialogue trees, and narrative logic straight into your game architecture in real-time.
Secure Tunneling
Access your local Lorebase server from anywhere with our upcoming secure tunneling service. Alternatively, skip the service and host a LAN-party or forward a port on your router if you prefer managing your own access.
Web Publishing
Share your worlds with the public instantly. We are building a web publishing service similar to Obsidian Publish, allowing you to deploy your local environment as a beautiful, functional lore repository in just one click.
